Dr. Larry Simmons is the senior director of credentialing at the National League for Nursing. His nursing career spans more than 40 years, with the last 20 years spent in nursing education.

He has developed expertise in test construction, test item writing, and faculty and curriculum development. Dr. Simmons leads the task groups at the NLN for the development of the academic clinical nurse educator and the academic novice nurse educator role definitions, establishment of competencies and task statements, practice analyses, and development of the certifications related to those roles. He is also certified as credentialing professional.

Dr. Simmons is an established nationally and globally known speaker and has received the certification of Global Nurse Consultant. In 2023, Dr. Simmons was inducted as a Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing.

Amanda Henderson has an extensive career in nursing education, research and leadership in both academic and clinical settings. She is Nursing Director (Research), at Princess Alexandra Hospital, in Metro South, Brisbane; And Professor, Central Queensland University. Her interests are developing effective partnerships across university and industry stakeholders to advance learning in practice. She has over 180 publications in international referred journals, primarily in workplace learning environments and practice change. She has a sole authored book “Communication in Health Care Practice”, published by Oxford University Press 

Dr Louise Lawson is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences University of Gibraltar. She is an expert paediatric, neonatal and adult registered nurse clinician and senior educationalist with over 35 years of experience in both nursing and Higher Education. Academic qualifications include a Doctorate in Education (EdD), MA Higher Education (Nursing), BSc Hons Adult Nursing, and is a Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Louise has an extensive publication and international conference profile relating to mentorship and learning in nursing.

Fengying Zhang is a Vice Dean of West China School of Nursing, Sichuan University; PhD, professor, and master's supervisor; graduated with a PhD in nursing from Sichuan University and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Tokyo; has visited Harvard University, Michigan State University, and the Texas Medical Center in the United States for study and exchange; focuses on research areas such as geriatric nursing, nursing management, and nursing education.

Dr Christine Nightingale originally trained as a registered nurse for people with learning/intellectual disabilities. This experience has influenced her whole career and her advocacy for fairness, equality, equity and social justice, most especially in health and education. Chris believes strongly that designing inclusive provision impacts positively on everyone.

Chris has worked in four UK universities, in third sector organisations and the UK National Health Service (in hospitals, community and commissioning).. She is Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Suffolk.

Geetha is a Professor in INTI International University, Malaysia. She graduated from University of Malaysia (UM) with Ph.D. in Medical Virology. She is a dedicated academician with 30 years of research experience and more than 50 publications to date. Her research is focused on antibiotic resistance in pathogens and in screening indigenous herbs for antimicrobial activity to be translated into suitable options to eventually replace or potentiate the use of antibiotics. Her dedication to research has led to an award by Asia International Research Awards in Microbiology in 2023. She has also been invited as a Keynote speaker in several international conferences in India and Indonesia.

Nicolaus Dahlmann completed his PhD from University Hamburg with his work about childhood development and obesity and published the results in three international journals as a student.He worked ten years in the Department of Molecular Biology, University Hamburg and detected a new enzymatic activity (dTTPase), received two awards (Dr. Martini Prize, G.E. Konjetzny Prize).He became consultant in Laboratory Medicine and then head of the Laboratory, General Hospital, Hamburg-Harburg.He was conferred Professor for Laboratory Medicine by the University Bonn. In 2022, he founded the Institute for Biometry and Nutrition, Hamburg and is CEO of the start-up “stringID”.He published about 50 articles in peer-reviewed international journals.

Here we report a case of a 27-year-old anovulatory patient, gravida 1 para 1, who underwent two frozen-thawed single-blastocyst transfers in separate cycles. The patient reported that 12 days after the first transfer, she had menstrual bleeding and stopped her estradiol and progesterone supplementation without undergoing a blood human chorionic gonadotropin (?hCG) test. Nursing staff are exposed to primary and secondary psychological trauma daily. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) (2014). Trauma can be “a single event, multiple events, or a set of circumstances that is experienced by an individual as physically and emotionally harmful or threatening and that has lasting adverse effects on the individual’s physical, social, emotional, or spiritual well-being” (p. 2). It is a result of an intensely threatening event or events that exceed a person’s ability to protect his or her psychic wellbeing and integrity. Trauma doesn’t have to be experienced by the individual to cause difficulty. It can be something an individual observed, rather than experienced him/herself.

The Effect of Web Based Type 2 Diabetes Education On Diabetes Self Management
This study is a control group intervention study to determine the effect of web-based education on diabetes self-management in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Statistically significant decrease in HbA1c and LDL values, diabetes self-management scale, diabetes attitude scale and self-care scale scores were found to be significantly different between the intervention and control groups.

Using poetry to confront the boundaries that separate us in nursing practice
My poem entitled “Resume Compressions” is a winning entry in the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) College of Nursing’s 2023 creative writing contest (Hepburn, 2023). I am a nursing PhD student at UNMC, which is located in Omaha, NE, USA. The contest’s theme was “Nurses Confront Boundaries That Separate Us.” This poem is based on personal experiences I had as an Emergency Department (ED) nurse. Though I am no longer an ED nurse, many of the people and situations stuck with me through the years. I know that bearing the burden of lasting impressions is not unique to me and believe my poem may strike a chord with a wide audience of nurses. I am submitting “Resume Compressions” to your conference hoping that other nurses will hear it and feel seen.

Improving psychosocial well-being after stroke
Background: About one third of all stroke patients develop one or more psychosocial problems after stroke. These problems can lead to suboptimal rehabilitation and reduced participation in daily and social activities. Although in the last decades a lot has been invested both in research and daily practice to improve psychosocial care, the prevalence of psychosocial problems after stroke did not decrease. Most previous studies have in common a sole focus on one particular psychosocial disorder, while practice and research suggest clustered occurrences of psychosocial problems. Furthermore, healthcare professionals generally do recognize the importance of psychosocial care after stroke, but are often unsure about how to best provide psychosocial care or whose responsibility this is. Therefore, the aim of our study was to identify effective interventions – or intervention components – which could be used by nurses to improve patients’ psychosocial well-being after stroke.

A new anthropometric model for estimation of fat and muscle mass as a tool in public health
To our knowledge, it is the first time that a direct relationship between increasing amounts of obesity and muscle could be demonstrated. The current study provides another step on the roadmap to develop the DBA model as a tool in public health in relation to management of obesity and sarcopenia.

Nursing Students’ Experiences of a Student-Led Collaborative Online International Learning Program
Research on COIL programs is limited. This program, developed across three global universities, was implemented to provide an internationalization-at-home experience for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study aimed to explore undergraduate nursing and midwifery students’ perspectives on participating in a student-led collaborative online international learning (COIL) program.

Stronger Together: RN and RPN Collaborative Practice
In health care is essential as it strengthens the relationship among teams and enhances an integrative work platform. Registered Nurses (RNs) and Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) work together across different care settings in a supportive role that enhances patient outcomes, job satisfaction, and retention. Nursing stands as the largest healthcare profession in the nation, boasting nearly 4.2 million nurse’s nationwide (Statistics Canada, 2022). In Canada, nurses constitute the largest segment of regulated health professionals, comprising approximately half of the total health workforce. However, globally, there has been a shortage of nurses attributed to burnout, physical injuries, and job dissatisfaction (Statistics Canada, 2022). To address the nursing shortage, several healthcare services have adopted the nursing skilled-mix model, facilitating collaboration between RNs and RPNs. At NHU (pseudonym), over the last six years, this practice model has been utilized to adequately staff nurses on Specialized Acute Care (SAC) units. Nonetheless, no formal study has been conducted to explore the experience of RNs and RPNs regarding collaborative practice. Qualitative Action Research (AR) was conducted to comprehend challenges and pinpoint effective strategies for strengthening collaborative practice among RNs and RPNs.

Engaging a Workforce Utilizing an “All In” Approach
Elevated levels of team member engagement are associated with high performing teams and healthy work environments. Employee engagement surveys are one method to assess the health and wellness of the work environment. The leadership team of two community hospitals wanted to improve team member response rates and implemented creative strategies to engage the team. This project's purpose was to improve team member engagement with the employee engagement survey. The primary outcome measure was to improve team member response rates by 5% on the following survey.

Home based palliative care takes a team approach: the addition of paramedics
People with advanced chronic disease most often wish to spend their final days at home, yet over three-quarters will have at least one Emergency Department visit in the last six months of life, with over half of those visits involving transport by paramedics. The public sees paramedics as part of a system of care, including nurses, physicians, home care and inpatient services. The Paramedics Providing Palliative Care program was launched in 2014. Eliminating silos between palliative care nurses and physicians, and paramedics, has been key to successful implementation.

Utilizing AI chatbots in nursing education offers advantages such as the quick retrieval of information. The purpose of this presentation is to describe the use of AI chatbots by educators and students across various healthcare disciplines, including nursing, and to present examples of diverse AI chatbot software tools and their applications.

Early referrals save lives in advanced heart failure
Heart failure (HF) is a chronic, progressive medical condition that can quickly cause deterioration of the patient’s medical and functional status. Delay of HF diagnosis and improper treatment can lead to catastrophic patient outcomes. This case report describes a 62-year-old with HF with reduced ejection fraction secondary to nonischemic cardiomyopathy, s/p cardiac resynchronization therapy defibrillator in 2020. He presented to the emergency department for worsening shortness of breath and chest pain for 3 days and subsequently had cardiac arrest. The patient eventually underwent a successful implantation of left ventricular assist device as a bridge to transplant. Timely referral yields a better patient outcome. This case study illustrates a clinical pathway that can be used by primary care providers when considering referral of a patient with advanced HF (AHF) to an AHF center for management and possible advanced therapies.

Reducing Use of Seclusion on a Male Medium Secure Forensic Ward
The reduction of restrictive practices is a priority for mental health inpatient services. Often such practices are considered to increase patients’ feelings of anger, loneliness, hopelessness and vulnerability. Moreover, such approaches are counterintuitive to both recovery-orientated and trauma-informed practice. Our project, based in a male 15-bed secure forensic ward, aimed to reduce the duration (outcome measure) and frequency (balancing measure) of the use of seclusion by 10% over 6 months. Following the analysis of our local data systems and feedback from both patients and staff, we identified the high levels of use of seclusion, and reluctance to terminate it. These included a lack of awareness of the effective and appropriate use of such a facility, a hesitancy to use de-escalation techniques and an over-reliance on multidisciplinary team and consultant decision making.

The Impact of Parental Overprotection on the Emotions and Behaviors of Pediatric Leukemia Patients: A Multicenter Cross-sectional Study
Parental overprotection may have an impact on children’s emotional and behavioral problems (EBPs), particularly in cases of childhood leukemia where the immune system is compromised. This excessive worry can impede the physical and mental development of these children. Hence, it is imperative to mitigate overprotection for the comprehensive well-being of pediatric leukemia patients. The aim of this study is to explore the present status of EBPs in pediatric hematologic tumors and analyze the associated risk factors.

Early ambulation protocol after diagnostic transfemoral cerebral angiography an evidence-based practice project
A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 214 patients undergoing TFA with manual compression. Patients in the experimental group were placed supine position for 2 hours with a sandbag placed on the wound dressing, followed by a semi-seated position for another 2 hours. After this period, patients took 2h bed rest(move freely) with the sandbag removed, and were allowed to get out of bed 6h after TFA. Patients in the control group were restricted to an 8h bed rest in a supine position with the affected leg straight and immobilized. The vascular complications(bleeding, hematoma, ecchymosis) and levels of comfort(low back pain, leg pain, and blood pressure)were evaluated after the procedure. Numeric Rating Scale(NRS) pain scores, systolic blood pressure(SBP); diastolic blood pressure(DBP) were measured hourly for 8h after TFA.

Nature's Pharmacy: Harnessing Plant Extracts for Wound Healing
Medicinal plants have been used to treat human ailments since ancient times, providing a rich library of bioactive chemicals with a wide range of applications. With the increase of antibiotic resistance and the limitations of traditional wound treatments, there is an urgent need for alternative therapeutic agents, hence the studies on natural products. Extracts derived from medicinal plants are perceived as safer alternatives compared to synthetic drugs. They typically contain a complex mixture of bioactive compounds that work synergistically to promote healing. Furthermore, plant extracts tend to have fewer adverse effects compared to synthetic drugs, as they are composed of natural constituents that are often well-tolerated by the body. This makes them particularly suitable for long-term or repeated use in chronic wound management.

Caffeine consumption habits, sleep quality, sleep quantity, and perceived stress of undergraduate nursing students
Consumption of energy drinks is prevalent among college students and has increased over the last decade. Many students consume stimulants like caffeine and energy drinks to combat feelings of sleepiness or to boost mood, which may undermine the practice of healthy habits. Nursing school is known for its rigorous curriculum, which includes fluctuating schedules, rigorous testing, and clinical rotations that require shift work, resulting in feelings of stress and limited sleep. There is inadequate research regarding the energy drink consumption habits of undergraduate nursing students.

Mnemonic utilization in stroke education: FAST and BEFAST adoption by certified comprehensive stroke centers
Will briefly discuss the importance of stroke symptom recognition and the need for easy to remember educational content for public and healthcare providers. Will discuss two mnemonics widely used for recognizing stroke symptoms: FAST (Face-Arm-Speech-Time) and BEFAST (Balance-Eyes-Face-Arm Speech-Time). The FAST mnemonic can miss up to 14% of strokes. BEFAST includes common posterior circulation stroke symptoms and has been implemented by several Comprehensive Stroke Centers (CSCs).

Semi-automated artificial intelligence (AI)-powered techniques to empower evidence-based nursing practice
Evidence-based best practice guidelines (BPGs) provide a variety of recommendations to inform clinical practice, developed through rigorous methodologies including systematic reviews and input from expert panel members. Health service and academic organizations around the world formally partner with an Ontario-based Nursing Association to systematically implement BPGs to foster an evidence-based culture and provide quality care to persons and their families1-3. Organizations conduct gap analyses to inform the selection of BPG recommendations and indicators to report on to indicate the impact of BPG implementation. Health service organizations use multi-faced approaches to implement recommendations that are valid and feasible given the gap analysis, to achieve positive health outcomes. A semi-automated artificial intelligence (AI)-powered technique was developed to understand how to best prioritize recommendations for implementation.

Communication gaps, incomplete, or fragmented can be attributed to many disasters in human civilization. Coordination of care within healthcare is directly related to proper communication and handoff between multidisciplinary teams throughout multiple shifts during the patient’s hospitalization. Mayo Clinic Health System Mankato in Southwest Minnesota realized a decline in patient communication with doctors and nursing in 2017-2018 which was reflected through patient surveys and direct patient feedback. Leadership took this as an opportunity and initiated several changes to increase doctor and nursing communication resulting in no significant improvements. A systematic quality improvement approach was implemented utilizing the Six Sigma methodology.

As the current health care continues to evolve, follows the reform of nursing education, nursing practice, and regulations. There is an increase in the need to gather evidence-based knowledge and translate to practice to ensure learner and healthcare needs are met.

Competence Assessment in Nursing Education – Phase 1
There is currently no standardized method of assessing the clinical competence of undergraduate nursing students in New Zealand. Each educational institution has developed their own methods and processes for determining clinical competence. Establishing the suitability of competence assessment tools and consistency of undergraduate clinical assessment practice is paramount to student and patient safety.

Effectiveness of Amiodarone in Preventing the Occurrence of Reperfusion Ventricular Fibrillation After the Release of Aortic Cross-Clamp in Open- Heart Surgery Patients: A Meta-analysis
We searched the Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and PubMed databases through January 2021 for relevant studies addressing the efficacy of amiodarone in preventing RVF after ACC release in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. A complete statistical analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3. Risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated to express the results of dichotomous outcomes using random or fixed-effect models. The chi-square test and I2 test were used to calculate heterogeneity.

Person-centered care associated with management of non- communicable chronic diseases
Adults with non-communicable diseases self-assessed their quality of life, health, and life satisfaction as positive. More than half of the participants self-assessed managing their non- communicable diseases as effective. It was found significant differences in individuals’ quality of life according to gender, level of education, relationship status, number of non- communicable disease and management of non-communicable disease. A positive association was found between person-centered care and effective management of non-communicable diseases. Better managing non-communicable diseases is associated with individuals’ quality of life, life satisfaction, and health.
